ETP Inaugural Roundtable in Rwanda

Overview

Our roundtable in Rwanda took place from 19 to 22 September 2023. It provided an opportunity for a high-level policy engagement to influence and contribute to conducive policies and regulations for a thriving tea sub-sector that is socially just and environmentally sustainable.

The aim of the roundtable was to strengthen collaboration with the National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB) and improve dialogue between producers in Rwanda and ETP Members.

Attendees included tea factory representatives, producer representatives, ETP members, NAEB, local and national government agencies, and civil society partners.

Throughout the roundtable we encouraged honest, open debate and discussion. We focused on getting to the core of the issues and answering our members’ questions. In the various breakout sessions, we concentrated on very specific issues to determine clear takeaways for the industry.

  • 19 September

    ETP Members attending the programme field visit arrived in Kigali.

     

    Accommodation: Radisson Blu Hotel & Convention Centre (KG 2 Roundabout, Kigali, Rwanda).

  • 20 September

    ETP organised transportation to the Improving Livelihoods Strategic Alliance programme field visit at tea estates in Kitabi.

    Accommodation: Nyungwe Nziza Ecolodge (Nyungwe park – Kitabi Nyamagabe, Rwanda).

  • 21 September

    ETP organised transportation to field visits in Nyaruguru.

     

    ETP hosted a reception and dinner for ETP members and key industry stakeholders at Kigali Convention Centre (KG 2 Roundabout, Kigali, Rwanda), from 19:00 – 22:00.

  • 22 September

    Inaugural ETP Roundtable in Rwanda at the Kigali Convention Centre (KG 2 Roundabout, Kigali, Rwanda).

    1. Welcome and keynote speeches
    2. Understanding the Rwandan Tea Sector – Sustainability priorities for NAEB, Producers, and ETP and its members
    3. The future of tea in Rwanda – Discussion on the opportunities for collaboration
    4. Towards a Shared Vision – Reflections on key themes and action points
    5. Closing remarks
